  • Queenless

Yesterday I tried the bee health guru app for the first time.
At one of our hives I ran a 30 second scan and got 6.4% for queenless. Then I ran a 60 second scan and got 2.7% queenless. Later the same day we inspected this hive and found they definitely do not have a queen.
There is no brood. Nothing but honey in various stages of production.

Thanks for letting us know. Queenless hive is one of the few conditions that a human ear can pickup.

I have two confirmed queenless hives. I got readings of 2.3% and 4.7%.

That's why we need to tune the app for each variable. Please tell me that you recorded, filled out an inspection report, and upload the files to the Cloud with a NOTE under the inspections telling Robert which hives were queenless, and that the app failed to properly discern. If you did not upload the files, then your effort will not provide this critical information toward tuning for accuracy. Those are very important files.

For Rich - the sounds bees make when queenless have a time-limit. When first lost, they announce it. After some period of time, they stop sounding off.

No one technology by itself satisfies all needs. An IR camera can show colonies that have long been queenless - the bees don't cluster much, if at all. Add something like a Flir ONE, Gen 3 IR camera to your phone, and you've got two technologies for comparison.

Jerry: I did record it, but I hesitate to report the data. I have posted a new thread that details the reasons for my hesitation of reporting the data.

I'm finding the same thing. I pulled queens from five hives this week. On all five the app showed less than 10 percent under "queenless," and nothing else out of the ordinary. I've uploaded the one that was queenless for two days when I tested it, the other four were queenless for a day.
